The first Welland Canal operated between 1829 and 1844, and in Port Colborne in 1833. Since then, the City of Port Colborne has been,
and remains, one of the most celebrated and vital ports in Ontario.
Given the importance of the Welland Canal to the shipping industry, merchants and local economy, Port Colborne’s traditional “Top Hat Ceremony” officially welcomes the first down-bound ship of the season through Lock 8, and pays tribute to the city’s marine heritage.
The ceremony hosts the Captain of the honoured ship as well as dignitaries and the public as the “Official Register” is signed and pictures are taken. The “Top Hat” and register are kept at the Port Colborne Historical Marine Heritage Museum during the year.
